Donating whole blood or platelets is a quick and easy way to give back to the Boston community! All of the blood products collected go directly to patients. Transfusing over 50,000 blood products last year, MGH has one of the largest blood needs in the country. MGH is home to the largest operating room in New England, which just completed its 3,000 th kidney transplant - more than any other site in the region! Other transplant programs, such as liver, heart, lung, and bone marrow, require large amounts of blood products for each operation. The MGH Cancer and Level 1 Trauma Centers are also the busiest in the region and receive many of the most severe adult and pediatric cases. Cancer and trauma patients are the top users of platelet transfusions, which are collected from both whole blood and platelet apheresis donations.
A consistent and reliable blood supply is the only way we can ensure these patients will receive the life-saving care they need. Therefore, rather than targeting specific blood groups at certain times, there is a constant need for all types of blood and all blood products. Whether you have the universal blood type, O-, or the more common A- or O+, you are somebody’s type and your blood will always help save the life of a patient at MGH.
The MGH Blood Donor Center is located at the main MGH campus in Boston at 55 Fruit Street, Jackson 120. Platelets are collected Monday - Thursday 7:30am - 5:00pm and Friday 8:30am - 3:00pm. Whole blood donation hours are Tuesday - Thursday 7:30am - 5:30pm and Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm. Our blood drive schedule can be found at www.massgeneral.org/blooddonor, or on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/mghblooddonor. If you have questions pertaining to eligibility or about the MGH Blood Donor Center please do not hesitate to call my direct line, (617) 726-8171 anytime Monday through Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm, or email me at kegamache@partners.org. Mission Statement
Donating blood is an easy, quick, safe way to save a life. Each and every day, hundreds of MGH patients require blood to help fight cancer, to replace what is lost in a trauma, or to treat a chronic disease. Through the 60 years of medical and technical advances at the MGH Blood Donor Center, the one constant has been the need for blood donors. Nothing has replaced the need for generous individuals to roll up their sleeve and donate blood for patients in need.
Description
Today the MGH Blood Donor Center provides the approximately 75,000 blood components necessary annually to transfuse patients at MGH and other nearby medical facilities. In addition to serving the patient population at MGH, we also provide blood and blood components to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Shriners Burn Institute for Children, the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, and MassGeneral for Children. Blood is supplied by volunteer donors - people who realize the ongoing need for lifesaving blood.
