The South Carolina State Guard (SCSG) is looking for a few more South Carolinians to help with our nationally recognized Search and Rescue teams and administrative support.
SCSG traces its heritage to 1670 and the first colonial militia. Today, SCSG provides organized, trained and disciplined volunteer units in engineering, medical, legal law enforcement and search and rescue for immediate use in domestic emergencies in order to protect life and property from imminent danger. SCSG along with the National Guard, is part of the Military Department of South Carolina, reporting through the Adjutant General Bob Livingston to Governor Nikki Haley as Commander-in-Chief.
SCSG units provided more than 23,000 person-hours to the state during the October 2015 flooding. Guard members were instrumental in emergency repairs to the Columbia Canal, distributing emergency supplies and providing search and rescue/recovery services throughout the state.

Mission Statement
OUR MISSION The SCSG acts in a support role for the National Guard, law enforcement and other state, county and municipal agencies during times of emergency. The State Guard is managed by the South Carolina Military Department under the direction of the Adjutant General. Its Commander in Chief is the governor of the State of South Carolina.
Description
About the Guard
The South Carolina Military Department is commanded by our State's Adjutant General. The Military Department consists of the S.C. National Guard, a part of our nation's military, and the State Guard, an all-volunteer state organization. The commander-in-chief of the State Guard is the governor. When serious natural or man-made disasters strike our state, members of the State Guard quickly respond to protect people and property and to help communities recover.
The State Guard is organized as an army division and is divided into three brigades. Each brigade has two battalions, corresponding to the boundaries of the six regions of the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.
New and current members receive training at the State Guards's Military Academy located at the S.C. National Guard McCrady Training Center in Eastover, S.C.
The State Guard enjoys a rich history that stretches back to the volunteer citizen-militia which was formed at Charles Towne with the first settlers in 1670. During WWII with much of the S.C National Guard deployed overseas, the S.C. Defense Force (now the State Guard) was established for service at home.
