Open Door Family Medical Centers, Ossining Site

Open Door Family Medical Centers participates in Reach Out and Read a national literacy program designed for medical offices. The goal is to help promote preschool literacy for children living in poverty and help them become more kindergarten ready. It is so simple, volunteers and doctors alike read aloud to our young patients, provide tips for parents to read with their child and give them a book to take home to promote reading at home.

The national Reach Out and Read program states that p arents served by Reach Out and Read are up to four times more likely to read aloud to their child.

Many of the families Open Door serves speak Spanish as the first language in the home. We would love to make bilingual books available for these families. Our volunteers can read to the child in English at the health center and the families can read to their child at home in Spanish.

Our goal is to collect 200 Bilingual English-Spanish children's board books and picture books for each of our 5 health centers. That 1,000 books. Gently used books are welcome.

Can you host a book drive to support the young patients at Open Door?

Individual donations are also welcome.

Please contact Alicia Ward at award@odfmc.org for more information or a book drive flier to use.
