Volunteer Barber or Beautician

Duties: The Volunteer Barber will cut hair free of charge for inpatients only. The Volunteer Barber is not required to wash hair or to shave the face of any inpatient. On each visit, the Volunteer Barber will check in with nursing staff. The nursing staff will determine which patients are in need of a haircut. The Volunteer Barber will adhere to the facility’s infection control policy by keeping his/her equipment clean and working properly. The Volunteer Barber is also responsible for keeping the area where the hair cut is performed clean, whether the ward has a designated area for haircutting or at the patient’s bedside. The facility will provide a dust pan, broom, hand-held vacuum, and disinfectant to the Volunteer Barber.

Qualifications: The Volunteer Barber must furnish and keep updated his/her state license. A copy of the current license will be kept in the Volunteer Barber’s personal file in the Voluntary Service Office. The Volunteer Barber should be organized, able to read, write, and communicate clearly and professionally.

Limitation of duties: Patients, who are in isolation or special contact precautions and desire a haircut at the bedside, must be cleared by the infection control nurse prior to the barber entering the room.

Physical Requirements of the Position: Primarily walking, standing, stooping, bending, pushing.

This position requires and annual TB test.
