IT Volunteers & Mentors Needed for Teen and Young Adult Summer Program - May extend to part-time employment opportunity for 2016-2017

IT Volunteers & Mentors Needed for 8-13 and Teen Program

We are looking for college students, teachers, IT enthusiasts, and professionals to assist our instructors in teaching IT classes (e.g.,Hardware A+/Network, IC3 & IC4, Coding/Programming Languages & Android and Apple App Development, to teach youth 10 years old and older in San Diego, CA

TIMES AND LOCATIONS:

· Classes will be held Wednesday 4:00 pm - 5:30 and possibly Saturdays

· Classes will be held at Poway Library

REQUIREMENTS FOR VOLUNTEERS:

· You must be able to pass a background check.

· You must complete one 90-minute volunteer training session.

· You should enjoy working with youth, believe in students' potential to achieve, and be confident in your ability to make a positive difference in their lives.

· Qualified and enthusiastic volunteers

ABOUT US:

IT Computer Wiz Kids, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization committed to teaching youth about technology from underrepresented and underserved communities. Through hands-on, experiential team-building activities and a life skills-based interactive approach, we uncover young people's hidden talents and guide them through multiple Information Technology (IT) learning development channels. Our students range from K-12. Because it is never too soon or too late to instill a sense of purpose in their lives.

Our mission is to provide youth with experiences and exposure that will lead to their sustained interest in IT and STEAM-ME (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) careers and empower them as globally competitive, critical-thinking problem solvers prepared to enter the 21st Century workplace. Most importantly, we are not just looking for IT instructors, we are looking for teachers with a genuine interest in nurturing young people into becoming productive and positive adults. We hope to empower disadvantaged youth to see themselves in boardrooms around the world instead of on the streets.

CLASS CURRICULUM YOU WILL BE TEACHING:

Class 1 - Computers and How They Work; Understanding hardware, operating systems and software, Windows vs. Mac. Discussions on the importance of STEM in your child's future.

Class 2 - Dissecting the Computer - Introduction to computer building: Learn how to to take apart a computer, identify each component, and put it back together.

Class 3 - Introduction to Programming/Coding: Students will learn introductory programming concepts to engage in free-form coding to create coding projects. Instructors will introduce students to the fundamentals of coding by introducing them to languages including HTML, Javascript, Python C, and C++. These languages will serve as entry points for learning how to program.

Class 4 - Electronic Etiquette and Internet Safety for Youth: This class covers various facets of electronic etiquette for professional success. It includes understanding Internet ethics and plagiarism, and learning to develop safe, healthy, and respectful relationships online using social media. Students will discover how posts can affect their future. Incorporated is a discussion of cyberbullying and online web safety.

Class 5 - Building the Ultimate Gaming PC: Demonstration on how to build a powerful PC for gaming, video editing, coding, graphics and design. By doing so students will learn the components of gaming PCs Review of lessons. Computer building competition.

Mission Statement

IT Computer Wiz Kids is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization focusing on STEAM-ME (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, money management and etiquette) a program that instructs children, youth, adults and prepares them for careers in information technology. Our youth work with seniors to build an intergenerational bridge to our Techno Savvy Seniors program. This bridge is necessary to navigate the digital divide. Seniors will gain basic and up to date technology skills to have an active technical life. IT Computer Wiz Kids’ volunteers are able to teach and serve as peer mentors to their fellow students, and contribute to the program’s growth. IT Computer Wiz Kids continues to attract adult IT professionals who demonstrate a passion to guide youth and young adults for careers in information technology.

If you are a parent, IT professional or are interested in encouraging young people to learn about computer and information technology, we invite you to join our team. You can help in many ways including donating money, joining our team of amazing volunteers and ambassadors, or by applying
for our job openings to help guide young people along their career paths. We will acknowledge your support on our website, via social media, and in our seasonal newsletters. IT Computer Wiz Kids, Inc. was formed for the advancement of youth and young adults in information technology (IT) and computer learning for educational and charitable purposes. The mission of IT Computer Wiz Kids, Inc. is to give youth the confidence to pursue a career in Information Technology (IT) and the computer industry in a fun and exciting learning environment; and to promote job training and career preparation that will prepare youth for a successful transition to adulthood. The program’s focus is to serve underprivileged and at-risk youth who reside primarily in the greater Washington D.C. area. All activities are conducted around established school-year calendars with classes being held both during class time as well as afterschool and on weekends as well.
