The mission of Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington Counties is to reduce the causes of poverty and its impacts on people’s lives. Community Action serves the community with a variety of programs including Energy Assistance, Energy Conservation, Head Start, Early Head Start, Civic and Community Engagement Programs.

Title: Voter Registration Internship

Purpose: You will support the Civic Engagement Coordinator in lifting up the voices of the low-income community through civic engagement training, leadership development, and voter education. Interns will learn to lead voter education and registration efforts for Community Action under the direction of the Community Engagement Department. Each year Community Action serves more than 24,000 households, presenting a unique opportunity to launch a 2016 campaign focused on reaching the participants we serve.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Interns will have an opportunity to:

  • Learn to develop training materials for best practices related to voter registration

  • Acquire skills to research and compile state voting registration rules

  • Learn how to train, support and manage voter registration volunteers

  • Gain an understanding of how to coordinate voter registration booth, events, and national voter registration day activities

  • Understand how to track and report outcomes related to numbers educated and registered

  • Learn to work collaboratively across department to increase number of registered voters

  • Acquire the knowledge to proactively register voters, including approaching people directly

Requirements & Qualification

  • Experience in a non-profit and/or political landscape

  • An ability to work effectively with team members and volunteers

  • Able to manage work independently

  • An affinity for politics, particularly civic engagement within low-income communities

  • Ability to provide neutral, relevant information related to voter registration

  • Experience interacting with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds

  • Must be well organized and particularly adept at managing many details and tasks accurately as well as efficiently in a fast paced environment

  • Must be able to practice confidentiality

  • Must pass background check

  • Experience working with populations served by Community Action is a plus

  • Bilingual in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, or Karen not required but a plus

Time Commitment:

Position is minimum of 15 hours per week for 12 weeks during office hours M - F from 8:00am-4:30pm. Occasional weekend or after office hours may occur depending on schedule. The position is slated to start in the beginning of August.
