During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. When school lets out many of these children are at risk of hunger. As a Summer Lunch volunteer, you can help ensure that local children get the nutrition they need to succeed. Last Summer the San Jose Public Library was able to provide over 7,000 meals to children and families.
Duties can include: Set up and clean up, meal preparation, customer service, and promoting the Summer Reading Challenge Program as well as the library's other current events.
Fingerprint background check required for volunteers age 18 or over.

Description
Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.
Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
