ORGANIZATION: GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis)

GMHC is a not-for-profit, data-driven, volunteer-supported, and community-based organization committed to national leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We provide HIV prevention and coordinated care services to men, women and families living with or affected by HIV/AIDS in New York City.

The Development Department plays an important role in maintaining the financial health of the organization by raising funds through special events and other efforts such as direct mail campaigns, cultivating relationships with donors, and applying for grants.

GMHC's Special Events Intern will support a part of the Development Department that focuses on producing fundraising events that help support the agency, and highlight the work GMHC does to the outside world. The position will provide the intern with a range of experiences from a variety of efforts implemented by a development department in a major non-profit organization.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:

  • Assist with event preparation logistics including vendor comparisons, follow up, organization of marketing materials
  • Create proposed social media strategies for upcoming events
  • Assist in data entry and management of past event attendees and vendors
  • Assist in administrative duties, including preparing acknowledgement letters and other mailings
  • Additional responsibilities may be added based upon the interests of the intern and the needs of the department

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program (at least half-time) as an undergraduate or graduate student.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
In addition to the above-listed job responsibilities and educational requirements, the ideal candidate for this position possesses most or all of the following:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Computer literacy in MS Office suite and the ability to learn new software
  • Experience with a donor database, especially Raiser’s Edge, a plus
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of and commitment to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment
  • A positive attitude
  • Previous experience in a non-profit environment a plus

TIME COMMITMENT

  • 15 hours per week during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 9am-6pm)
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be requested to assist with special events

COMPENSATION
Internship opportunities are open to qualified individuals affiliated with an accredited academic institution for academic credit only. Since we are a nonprofit environment, our internships are unpaid, but we will support academic institution requirements for students by completing all paperwork required by the intern’s school or program.
