Kittens in Their Kennel

If you are a pet owner, you know that pets are messy which, of course, means someone has to clean it. That's where volunteers come in. We clean every cat kennel starting at 8:00 every morning and usually finishing up between 11:00 and 12:00. Kennels are cleaned daily to ensure the health and safety of our kitties.

Volunteers will be paired with a staff member or expirenced volunteer to learn the basics of kennel cleaning. Daily cleaning consists of wiping each pen down, washing all litter pans and food/water dishes. Deep cleaning, done on Tuedays, Wednesdays and Thursday, also involves wiping out kennels, washing litter pens as well as dishes, but includes a full 10 minute disinfection period while the cats are crated.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Elk County Humane Society shall be to provide effective means of proventing cruelty to animals throughout Elk County by: fostering humane education, assisting authorities in all laws pertaining to animals, by employing a Humane Officer, by operating a shelter that is open to the public and continuing to place a variety of animals, providing adoptive services, providing protection for animals. Description

In January 2001, the first public meeting was held. Within two months, a board was organized, by-laws written and the ECHS applied for a 501(c)(3) tax exemption. We operated without a building with the help of foster homes. In 2004, the City of Saint Mary's leased two acres of land to the Society for one dollar a year for fifty years. Donations from foundations, corporations, organizations, and individuals enabled us to build the Elk County Humane Society. Much of the work was donated. In June 2007, we opened our doors to the public. We now have 24 dog pens and runs, and 44 cat pens.
