Position Summary:

The Disability Allies (DA) is dedicated to providing a social and learning environment for young adults and children with disabilities. The Special Education Teacher is a part time volunteer position that involves a commitment of a few hours a week. The Teaching Assistant will work with the teacher to promote interactive and structured learning for students with disabilities.

Responsibilities:

The Special Education Teacher will promote interactive and structured learning for students with disabilities. The responsibilities of the Special Education Teacher are as follows:

  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs)
  • Review referral and assessment data and student history
  • Prepare for IEP meetings, providing current data and creating appropriate goals and objectives
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress
  • Perform assessments
  • Prepare materials, lesson plans and activities aligned with IEP goals
  • Develop individualized strategies to help individuals with social disorders improve their communication skills

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to connect with others and develop relationships
  • Committed to the mission of serving young adults with disabilities
  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain detailed records and confidential information

The Disability Allies (DA) is dedicated to providing a social and learning environment for young adults and children with disabilities. Students are paired up with mentors who help them learn in fun and structured environment. Our mentors help them with their social skills, help develop a core academic curriculum and reinforce learning strategies that were taught in school.

Description

The purpose of the Disability Allies is to plan team building activities that connect young adults and children with and without disabilities. At our events we pair each individual up with a mentor. The job of the mentor is to help the participants with their social skills and insure that everyone interacts with each other. Our events are open to any young adult that has a disability, knows someone with a disability or is supportive of people with disabilities. Currently our events will take place primarily in central New Jersey. We do plan on expanding and we will soon be doing events in all of New Jersey.
