ORGANIZATION: American Youth Literacy Foundation

Have you ever wanted to do something AMAZING to change the world but didn't know where to start? Here is an opportunity to help underprivileged children, to help under-served children, to help ALL children, and to help adults who can't read. You can be a part of an amazing convergence of forces that is about to change the literacy paradigm in the United States. The Barbara Bush Foundation and Dollar General are sponsoring the $7million XPrize for Adult Literacy to incent teams from around the world to develop solutions to the literacy crisis in America. The American Youth Literacy Foundation is 100% committed to winning this competition utilizing a Real Speech(tm) reading curriculum that we have been using for 8 years and that we believe, when converted to a digital app, will exponentially improve the way reading is taught in America's public schools. With our patented technology we are able to teach most children how to read in 12 hours or less! The XPrize rules require us to build an android-based, smart phone/tablet (phablet) application that teaches illiterate and low literate adults how to read without any teacher or adult supervision (something akin to how Duo-Lingo teaches foreign language). Our mission over the next 6 months is to build this application, adapting our reading curriculum to a digital format, testing in real world learning laboratories, creating new curriculum, and managing a team of people to bring this app to fruition. We are looking for one, talented, graphic designer illustrator who can join our team and help provide a consistent, uplifting and effective look and feel to our students' smartphone learning experience. We are looking for someone who has a keen sense of layout and design, who is wiling to help create a brand image using clean, smooth efficient lines and forms with bright, but not distracting color schemes. Ideally, you have worked on digital apps, tablet apps and smartphone apps before, but if not, you're willing to get up to speed quickly. Check out some "learning app screenshots" in google images to see some of the ways that educational apps approach their audiences. The ideal candidate is comfortable with creating quick but compelling illustrations in a 2D format (think smooth curves, simple lines, happy colors). You can make a huge difference in helping us solve the literacy crisis by joining our XPrize volunteer team of now 35 people including 12 developers and 6 ux and ui designers. This has been and will continue to be an incredibly exciting and rewarding experience for a small group of people. If this is something that you feel passionate about and want to get involved in then please reply today. We need your help. Your contribution in the development of this app, could make a difference in literally, millions of lives. Thank you! We truly look forward to hearing from you : ) Please provide cover letter and resume (or online portfolio) for this opportunity and we will contact you directly.

Get the FUNetix 12 hours Reading App out to America's children through smartphones, laptops, desktops, tablets, and classrooms. Get the app out through partnerships with publishing companies, schools, NGOs, parents, teachers, corporations and federal, state and local governments. Universal literacy is within reach because FUNetix is able to teach reading in a way that it has never been taught before, and with a speed that has never been conceived of before. FUNetix is here, and if your child is ready, we're ready. You can start learning how to read in 12 hours, today!

Description

FUNetix is a patented, science-based, and incredibly simplified way of teaching reading to children that's available to parents and children anywhere in the United States and anywhere in the world. The FUNetix 12 hours Reading App is available in the App Store, Google Play store and Amazon App store.

FUNetix is 19-years-new, but in some ways, it is more than 2,000 years old.

Indeed, the patented FUNetix Reading Decoding System is rooted in an ancient methodology that shows readers how to see the hidden sounds in every word.

FUNetix earned its patent by borrowing the time-tested method called "diacritics" (which was developed more than 2,000 years ago by the Greeks, and adopted more than 1,000 years ago by the Hebrew and Arabic languages, to teach ALL children how to read those languages), and uniquely, completely and systematically applying it to English in a child-friendly and simple way.

FUNetix teaches children how to "map" or "marry" all 44 sounds of the English language to the letters and letter combinations that make up English words. This mapping (made easy by diacritics) takes all of the guesswork out of "sounding out" words.
