Position Summary:
Do you love to help children and have interest in helping to grow their reading skills and succeed in school? If your answer is yes, consider joining the largest AmeriCorps tutoring program in the country and make a difference in the lives of Kindergarten through third grade aged students! We’ll provide training so no prior tutoring, formal education experience, or experience with children is necessary. In addition to extensive training, tutors will receive on-site support from trained school literacy coaches. Tutors come from many backgrounds and include recent high school and college grads, career changers, stay-at-home parents, and retirees. Positions are filling fast so apply today!
Duties or Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one and with small groups of students who need extra support learning to read. Tutors work with the same students in 20-minute sessions every day during school hours, using a variety of scripted Minnesota Reading Corps strategies, called interventions.
- Conduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system. Tutors will use this data to monitor student progress, plan, and set goals
- Maintain confidentiality of all student data
- Provide opportunities for families to get involved in their child’s education by sharing Reading Corps literacy activities to do at home
- Attend 3 days of mandatory training prior to service with students, plus additional required training sessions throughout the year. Tutors will receive the consistent support of an onsite coach. Some travel may be necessary to attend training
- Participate in site-sponsored activities such as book fairs and family nights
- While the majority of service hours are completed onsite during school hours, most tutors engage in additional community service, which may take place during evening and weekend hours
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently
- Age 18 or older by the program start date
- Possess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start date
- Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States
Please note:
Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service.
Tutors are paid a modest living allowance every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild. Tutors may be eligible for health insurance, child care assistance, and student loan forbearance during their service.
