Have you ever thought about becoming a Certified Medicare Counselor?

If you have a passion for helping others, are dependable, understanding, patient, and compassionate, we invite you to become a SHIBA counselor!


SHIBA certified counselors help people navigate the Medicare system by provding help and advice on how to:

  • Compare Medicare Advantage plans
  • Compare Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans
  • Select Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)
  • Apply for Medicare Savings Programs, including Extra Help with Medicare Part D.

SHIBA counselors also review Medicare bills, assist with appeals, and report complaints.

Interested individuals should have:

  • Good communications skills
  • Be able to protect client confidentiality
  • Have no conflict of interest (such as an insurance agent)
  • Be able to use a computer, email, and the Internet.

Full trainnig will be providded at no expense to you.

FLEXIBLE hours to fit your schedule

  • Assistance can be offered by phone and in person.
  • SHIBA counselors typically volunteer 4 hours a week, yet may volunteer more or less.
  • Mandatory counselor meetings generally occur every other month.

Description

NorthWest Senior & Disability Services (NWSDS) is a local intergovernmental agency that was created in 1982. Designated as the Area Agency on Aging for Clatsop, Marion, Polk, Tillamook and Yamhill Counties. NWSDS is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating and arranging services for seniors and people with disabilities in these five counties.

Funds for the operation of NWSDS and its programs come from the federal and state government, as well as from community groups and individual donations. NWSDS also relies heavily on dedicated and compassionate volunteers who serve in the following programs:

  • Meals on Wheels
  • Senior Dining Centers
  • Oregon Money Management Program
  • SHIBA (Medicare Counselors)
  • Peer Mentoring Program
  • Advisory Councils
