Working with "pit bulls" to end the cycle of abuse.
Paws for Strength focuses on assisting abused children through the help of certified therapy "pit bull" type dogs. By bringing the two together we can create a positive and healing environment through the human-animal bond. With this program we hope to show the resiliency of "pit bulls" by working to train them to conduct therapy work.
Volunteer: Therapy sessions take place with the children residing at The Hephzibah House in Oak Park, IL in 8-week intervals. We are always looking to expand our volunteer Dog & Handler Teams as every dog can bring something new to a child. If you and your "pit bull" type dog want to become a Dog & Handler Team with us, please contact programdirector@bickellfoundation.org to learn about the requirements and certification needed to work with us.

About The Bryan & Amanda Bickell Foundation
Location:
Chicago, Chicago, IL 60622, US
Mission Statement
Founded by Blackhawks player Bryan Bickell and wife Amanda, the charity assists "pit bull" type dogs and children who have been victims of abuse.
Description
The Bryan & Amanda Bickell Foundation works to create a positive cycle of awareness through "pit bull" type dogs that were once the victims of neglect, abuse, or abandonment. These dogs are often misunderstood and mistreated as a result of their name. We work to promote these dogs for adoption or to aid in their rescue through our Bick's "Pit" program. We also work to educate the public about "pit bulls" while providing services to low-income "pit bull" owners through our Chicago Loves "Pits" program. By working with "pit bulls" who are rescued or adopted and have overcome abuse or bullying, we then focus on promoting the human-animal bond by bringing certified therapy "pit bulls" together with children who are victims of abuse through our Paws for Strength program. Lastly, we work with children who are victims of bullying to teach kindness and compassion through "pit bulls" as part of our Bullies Against Bullying program. The Foundation works to create a cycle of positivity sparked by compassion for the dogs we love so much.
