Opportunity: By participating as an Immigration Workshop Volunteer you will help move immigrants and their families to greater economic stability, self-sufficiency, protection and integration into American society. You will receive training on how to complete immigration applications for benefits such as Citizenship and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals ( DACA) to prepare you to assist individuals complete these applications in a workshop setting. In this position you will work one-on-one with applicants and get real hands-on experience under the supervision of an attorney or Board of Immigration Appeals accredited representative. Organization: Founded in 1918, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is a leading non-profit organization in Southern California. The Immigration and Refugee Services (IRS) has been Board of Immigration Appeals accredit for over 50 years and is dedicated to providing low-cost and free immigration services. It is the mission of the IRS to help vulnerable immigrants and refugees achieve self-sufficiency, family unity, and integration through exceptional legal and social services.
Qualifications:
Detail oriented, organized, and self-starter.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.
Interest in immigration and serving immigrant communities.
Cultural sensitivity.
Desire to work with people from other cultures and limited English speakers.
Willingness to learn and ability to follow through with tasks assigned.
Spanish fluency preferred.
Commitment: Immigration Workshops are held both weekdays in our office and on weekends in community locations which vary each month. Volunteer hours are from 9am - 3pm. Monthly time commitment is 6-12 hours.
Training: The Citizenship Volunteer will receive training and supervision from immigration staff in relevant immigration policies/procedures and completing assigned duties. Volunteers are required to attend an orientation and training prior to the start date.
Location: 1530 James M. Wood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90015. Saturday event locations vary.
