Summer Day Camp for young adults with disabilities. (10 riders per camp)

Sebastian Riding Students(Campers) are very independant;) but with some varying degree of (Physical,Mental,Cognitive,PTSD) dissabilities. They are strong riders and know their sport with horses very well....and love to share.

This is an oppurtunity for our young adults to enjoy horse camp with friends & siblings.

Volunteers help as Camp Counselors. We play games with on horseback in the indoor arena and outside. Make crafts in the theme of the week. We take long walks thru the wooded trails of Evansburg State Park to the creeks. Volunteers walk alongside each horse & rider, singing songs, bird watching, deer spotting and lending support along the trails.

Volunteers must be ok with outdoor living and animals. Volunteers do not ride horses during camp, but do walk along side horse as student rides. Volunteers can help groom, tack & cuddle the horses;)

Stop by our website for VOLUNTEER details. No experience necessary. We train.

Mission Statement

Sebastian Riding Associates improves the quality of life for children and adults living with disabilities through equine assisted therapy.

Description

Founded in 1975, Sebastian Riding Associates is one of the oldest equine therapy centers in the country providing therapeutic riding and hippotherapy.

Hippotherapy is a treatment approach that uses the movement of hte horse to improve posture, balance and mobility. Our hippotherapy students are not learning riding skills but are receiving therapy with one of our physical or occupational therapists.

Our therapeutic riding students are being taught not only riding skills but also how to groom and tack there horse with the assistance of one of our certified instructors.

Equine assisted therapy provides much more than the many physical benefits such as improved posture, balance and muscle tone. Behavioral benefits include self discipline, decision making skills, increased ability to focus and stay on task and promotes responsibility and cooperation. Cognitive benefits include improved hand/eye coordination and developing sequencing, patterning and motor planning. Social benefits include improved self confidence and trust taught through the horse/human bond.

Sebastian's conducts approximately 100 sessions in a two week period serving more than 115 students a year.
