Do you enjoy working with school age children? Do you feel inspired when you inspire others to learn and create?

Summer Camps at the Speed Art Museum are a great opportunity to get involved in a vibrant, inspiring setting. The camps focus on different themes each week, and have art activities which correspond to the theme. We are seeking help for each camp as they have been a huge success in recent years. The shifts are either 8:00a-12:00p OR 1:00p-5:00p. We ask that volunteers commit to the entire week (M-F) of camp. But you may choose to do either morning or afternoon shift.

See below for a description for each camp!

SUMMER CAMP 2020

June 15 - 19: Around the World
Traverse the globe and uncover art making techniques from different cultures - all without leaving the Museum. Campers will discover different parts of the world as they explore the Speed’s collection and create artworks inspired by their travels.

June 22 - 26: STEAM
If you’ve ever wondered about the science of color, the meaning of symmetry, or how that sculpture stands up on its own, this is the camp for you! Campers will connect concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to dynamic works of Art for a week full of curiosity driven fun.

June 29 - July 3: I Spy
Are there secrets hidden in works of art? If you ever thought you knew all about your favorite masterpiece, think again. Discover new ways of looking, thinking and interacting with art and the world around us. I spy with my eye a week of observing, examining and campers creating their own mysterious masterpieces.

July 13 - 17: Pop Art
What’s plain and boring that you can make brand new? Can words and phrases be turned into works of art? Campers will explore the movement of Pop Art by taking common, everyday images and phrases and transforming them into Andy Warhol inspired art.

July 20 - 24: Let Loose
Have you noticed art isn’t always confined to canvas and paper? Can a piece of cloth be transformed into a piece of art? Discover the answer and let loose your expectations. Campers will dig into concepts such as expressionism and abstract art, all while unleashing their creativity and exploring the Speed’s collection.

July 27 - 31: Maker "Space"
What do art and outer space have in common? Stumped? They have no limit! Budding astronauts will spend their week making, learning and exploring together. Drawing inspiration from the Speed’s collection, they will transform a universe of art concepts into out of this world masterpieces.

August 3 - 7: Teen Camp: Portfolio Intensive for Ages 13 - 17
Spend a week learning different techniques and developing a portfolio of artwork while immersed in the Speed’s collection! Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of instructors in drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, spending the whole day in the studio to dig deep into each medium. In the galleries, students will attend a curatorial talk and have access to other museum professionals to ask questions about a career in the arts. Meanwhile, they will be crafting their own artist statement and participating in informal group critiques to practice writing and speaking about their work. This camp is perfect for high schoolers preparing to take AP Classes or applying for college, or any student ready to take their art to the next level.

Minimum volunteer age is 16. Please complete a volunteer application here: http://www.speedmuseum.org/about/get-involved/volunteers/

With modern architecture, expanded programming, interactive exhibits and inviting outdoor spaces, the Speed offers countless opportunities for everyone to create their own connections and experience art at their own speed.
