A volunteer Citizen Teacher shows a team of midd...

This opportunity would take place once a week, 3:30 - 5:00 PM on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

Apprenticeships at Citizen Schools give adults the opportunity to take what they do best in their professional careers or personal pursuits and use it to help middle-school students move to a long-term trajectory of success. Volunteers teach for an hour and a half one afternoon a week at one of our middle schools in Oakland or East San Jose. No previous teaching experience required.

The whole experience spans 10 weeks and between 30 and 40 hours. Here's what it includes:

  • In-depth curriculum in a variety of subjects that volunteers can choose from
  • Training with Citizen Schools staff and school site orientation
  • Staff partner to support you in and out of the classroom
  • 10 afternoons of instruction with apprentices
  • A final "science fair" style event, called a WOW!

Volunteer Citizen Teachers enable young people to learn real-world skills by implementing project based curriculum. Lawyers turn their apprentices into prosecutors, artists cultivate young muralists, gardeners lead a team of twelve-year-old green thumbs, engineers train the next generation of programmers.

"WOW!" is what people usually say when they encounter the results of the apprentices' work. So that's what we call the final product, presentation or performance at the end of each apprenticeship. Every WOW! showcases the students' learning for a public audience of family, school staff, and community leaders.

We are actively recruiting interested volunteers for the Fall semester: September 2018 - December 2018.

Mission Statement

Citizen Schools envisions a world in which schools, companies and families partner to provide students with a set of real-world learning experiences that put them on a path to college and career success.

Description

Since 1995, Citizen Schools has been providing opportunities for adolescents to work side by side with experts to explore new fields, learn new skills, and build a foundation for their future. We partner with low-income communities that need additional support and resources. Our extended learning time program supports academic achievement in core subjects like English Language Arts and Mathematics, while building important 21st Century and Social Emotional skills through real-world learning experiences. Students who participate in Citizen Schools gain an additional 3 months of learning over the course of a year and are 25% more likely to enroll in college than low income students nationally.
