Represent the Food Bank of Iowa at the Des Moines Arts Festival! Tell attendees about the Food Bank of Iowa and assist them in going through an activity!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist set-up of the site
  • Tell attendees about what the Food Bank of Iowa does and answer any questions they might have
  • Lead atendees through an activity
  • Assist tear-down

Qualifications:

  • Be able to communicate with a diverse group of people
  • Willing to interact with atendees at the Art Festival
  • Comfortable leading atendees through a simple activity (directions provided)

Attire:

  • Dress comfortably and for the weather
  • Volunteer t-shirts are available - if you would like one please email Michaela at mdevaney@foodbankiowa.org with your size

Directions:

  • Western Gateway Park (1000 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50309)
  • The Community Outreach Booths will be located on the corners of 15th and Grand and 16th and Grand
  • Look for the Food Bank of Iowa booth (with an orange table cloth) and the previous volunteers will pass on their lanyards and any information that you will need to know

Parking:

  • Free parking will be available at the Nationwide Insurance parking ramp starting Friday after 3:30pm at 1100 Walnut street, between 10th and 12th streets. During the day on Friday only, parking will cost $3 - $5 before 3:30pm. If you enter before 3:30pm on Friday, but leave after, there will be no charge.

Time:

  • Each shift will be scheduled for 2-3 hours as noted
  • Shifts will take place rain or shine

Support/Training:

  • Staff and/or volunteer leads will be available throughout the event for ongoing support

Description

From the time the dock doors opened in 1982, we have maintained our No. 1 priority - maximizing "food in - food out" to meet the critical needs of a diverse population through our network of partner agencies in 55 Iowa counties.

As a non-profit food bank, our primary role is to provide food to the charitable agencies offering direct service to hungry Iowans.

These partner agencies include:

  • Food pantries
  • Soup kitchens
  • Homeless shelters
  • Shelters for victims of domestic violence
  • Nonprofit day care centers
  • Residential care centers
  • Child and senior programs

Along with traditional food banking, the Food Bank of Iowa also operates three successful programs: Backpack Buddies, HUSH and the Fresh Produce Project.
