MOCK INTERVIEW: JUNE 17th

BE AN INTERVIEWER! Now is your chance to give back and help out someone looking to develop their new career in the U.S. The Career Access Lab Program is seeking volunteers willing to share their feedback and experience with learners as interviewers at CAL’s Mock Interview Event. Interested? Please register for the event by confirming your attendance with the facilitator.

How does the process work?

  • Once registered, volunteers will receive confirmation of the day, date and time of the event.
  • Volunteers will receive resumes and Mock Interview Feedback Form one week prior to the event, in order to have time to properly review and prepare feedback for the event.
  • On the day of the event, volunteers should arrive by 6:00 pm for a brief orientation.
  • Following the event, volunteers will be invited to stay to provide feedback on the event to the CAL facilitator.

Coaching Process:

  • Volunteers will meet with CAL learner during the event for 30 min. and take part in a practice interview, allowing the learner an opportunity to practice answering difficult questions and develop interview strategies.
  • Using the Feedback Form, highlight the overall strengths of each learner’s interview. Offer suggestions for improvement in a supportive and positive manner.
  • Help learner to improve first impression, body language and to help boost confidence.
  • Offer feedback on interview content, with the goal to help learner appear concise and clear.
  • Ensure the learner is able to accurately and appropriately highlight their own key skills and accomplishments, by encouraging strategies that’ll best 'market themselves’.
  • Offer positive advice to give the learner confidence in their resume as a tool to help them in their job search.

Mission Statement

English At Large is a nonprofit that provides individual and small group instruction through a volunteer network to adult immigrants and other newcomers who want to acquire English language skills as they adapt to life in the United States. Our vision is that newcomers to the United States will develop the langauge skills and cultural knowledge needed to fully engage in their communities and fulfill their life goals.

Description

A small organization with a big impact!

Lexington resident Mildred Gilman founded English At Large in 1970 as a volunteer-based organization. Since then, the organization has grown to serve 21 communities and has helped more than 10,000 local adult learners. Supported by a small professional staff, hundreds of trained volunteers deliver our five programs: one-to-one English tutoring, group conversation practice, basic English and citizenship classes, and online learning.

Our tutors receive training and ongoing support. They deliver customized individual and small-group instruction targeted to each student's goals. They come from an array of backgrounds, and they share a commitment to student success.

Other volunteers work in the office, write learner success stories, help with fundraising and serve on our board and committees.

Our students come from around the world. Their ambitions are varied. Their accomplishments are real. They are gaining citizenship, finding work, and reading a book in English to a child for the first time. They are changing their lives.

Our supporters make everything possible. They include Massachusetts Department of Education, Acton-Boxborough United Way, Lenny Zakim Fund, Cummings Foundation and an array of businesses, associations, and individual contributors.
