How can you make a difference? Simple. Volunteer to help your community by preparing taxes free of charge with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program!
You will receive free IRS developed training to provide free tax help for low-to-moderate income families who need assistance preparing their tax returns. As a volunteer, you will join the thousands of others who each year prepare millions of tax returns at thousands of tax sites nationwide!
Volunteer Roles
- Tax Preparer - no experience required, we train you!
- Tax Site Greeter - this position is vital to each sites operation and does not require tax certification!
- Tax Site coordinator - requires 2 years VITA and/or professional tax experience.
- Tax Site assistant coordinator - requires 1 year VITA and/or professional tax experience.
- Interpreters - this position does not require tax certification. VITA sites serve many non-English speaking community members and interpreters can make all the difference!
VITA volunteers receive:
- IRS developed tax training provided both online and in the classroom.
- Quick Reference Guides and Resource Publications available for you to own.
- CE credits available!
- Internships accepted!
- Gain a valuable and marketable skill! References available upon request for job seekers!
- Make new friends! This is a great opportunity to meet other people in our community who are dedicated to helping others.
- Satisfaction of knowing that you had a direct impact on our community. Imagine helping someone put food on the table or saving someone from a mortgage foreclosure. As a VITA volunteer, you will help individuals and families keep their hard-earned money!
- End of the tax year volunteer celebration party and IRS volunteer appreciation certificates!
What we expect from our VITA volunteers:
- Volunteer your time 3-4 hours per week during the filing season at a VITA site near you and inform your volunteer coordinator in advance of any site dates you'll be unavailable for.
- Attend a new volunteer orientation.
- Complete volunteer training and certification.
- Basic Computer skills required
