Welcome to San Francisco Suicide Prevention. We're looking for empathic and reliable individuals to staff the late night portion of our crisis line. We have a large volunteer pool already serving our day shifts, but night time shifts tend to be more intense and require a greater degree of skill and training.
Overnight volunteers take calls every other week one night per week, from 11pm - 7am. Calls come in from all over the country but are concentrated in the Bay Area, and the time frame makes it so people are at their most isolated and afraid. Overnight volunteers attend our standard volunteer training, but mentor with overnight specific trainers.
San Francisco Suicide Prevention has been in operation since 1962, and was the first community based suicide hotline in the country. We operate with an emphasis of volunteers coming from all walks of life to provide peer-based support to those in crisis. There is a one-year or 200-hour minimum commitment.
All applicants must complete a volunteer application, available at the following URL:

San Francisco Suicide Prevention (SFSP) provides suicide prevention and crisis intervention services. Founded in 1962 by Bernard Mayes, SFSP is the oldest community-based telephone crisis center in the United States. With the support of over 200 volunteers and staff, SFSP is available to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
SFSP’s Crisis Line assists those experiencing or at risk of a crisis, with the goal of reducing suicides and self-destructive behaviors. Our hotline programs include HIV Nightline, Drug Info Line, Relapse Line and a Crisis Support Text line. In addition, we offer educational prevention and intervention trainings for organizations and schools and a peer-led grief support group for loss survivors.
