At the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce, a docent is a volunteer who guides visitors through the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House and the African American Cultural Heritage Facility. They are individuals looking to highlight and showcase the history of East Austin, as well as the art of local black artists behind collections such as #IAMBLACKAUSTIN and more. The purpose is to better engage the city, community, and visitors of Austin about Austin’s African American community and their influence throughout the Greater Austin Area.
Those who wish to become a docent should be prepared to make a long-term commitment in which they will work approximately 10-25 hours weekly. Those chosen to take part in the docent program will be provided with training and invited to two special docent luncheons and one optional field trip.
