As a Volunteer Shelter Advocate, you will be responsible for the following duties.

  • Answer hotline calls
  • Complete new resident intakes
  • Distribute needed supplies to residents
  • Enter data
  • Serve as positive role model for residents
  • Other duties as requested by advocate on duty

While the 4pm to 12am shift during the weekend is most needed, we are looking for volunteers who can cover other shifts and days, too!

The mission of NEWHOUSE is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing the tools that allow women to make positive choices and lead self-sufficient lives.

Description

Newhouse provides access, admittance and residence in temporary shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children 24-hours a day, every day of the year. Newhouse takes a comprehensive approach in meeting the needs of the women and children who turn to Newhouse for emergency shelter and for relief from the crushing distress of domestic violence.

Newhouse has served Kansas City's urban core for 42 years. In 2012, Newhouse provided 24,769 bednights to 792 residents (511 women and 281 children). Newhouse answered 9,248 emergency hotline calls and served 661 victims in the Municipal Domestic Violence Court system.
