About the organization
Street Child started in 2008, with one location, 100 children and 4 social workers, in Sierra Leone, West Africa. Since then Street Child has become a dynamic non-profit with an immense reach in Sierra Leone and Liberia, helping thousands of children find a more positive life away from the streets and creating educational opportunities for almost 50,000 children. During the Ebola crisis, Street Child supported close to 20,000 orphans with humanitarian aid and rehoming support. By empowering children by giving them the chance to go to school - and giving their families the income generation opportunities to help keep them there - Street Child is one of the most impactful charities working in our regions.
Street Child has expanded our operations to Nepal, in an attempt to serve increasing numbers of children in need. Nepal is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, ranked 77th out of 90 developing countries in the 2001 World Poverty Index. Government estimates suggest that 19.6 percent of children are out of school, though independent reports claim that between 30 and 40 percent of children are out of school. Of those enrolled in formal schools, it is estimated that nearly 50 percent drop out before completing basic education.
Street Child of Nepal has been working with UNICEF and other partner organizations to support the humanitarian relief effort in the earthquake-affected areas of Nepal, and is now exploring avenues for further impact. As an Ambassador, you will be part of an exciting stage of the organization’s growth, and will be working closely with the Street Child of Nepal team and partner organizations to support the delivery of project pilots and the design and development of emerging programs.
Terms of the role
The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently to urban, rural and remote project sites. Mission Statement
Street Child provides the world's poorest children with sustainable access to a quality education.
Description
121 million children around the world cannot go to school. We're working to change that.
121 million children are not being given the chance to go to school. Millions more are in school but failing to learn. From building schools and training teachers, to connecting orphaned or abandoned children with families, and offering people the chance to generate their own income, our sustainable, holistic model is all about giving the world's poorest children a chance.
Street Child started in Sierra Leone in 2008 working with a small number of street children. Since then we have helped over 120,000 children to go to school and enabled 22,000 families to generate sustainable incomes so that their children can stay in education. During the Ebola crisis, Street Child helped over 20,000 Ebola orphans, providing emergency support and connecting them with families. Today, Street Child works in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Uganda, Nepal, and Sri Lanka with a current emphasis on education in emergencies and girls' education.
