ORGANIZATION: Gift of Life Howie's House

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 19 people are interested

While staying at Gift of Life Howie's House, our guests often search for ways to decompress after a long day at the hospital. To help with this, we began our Sean Dukes Activities Program to facilitate activities, both volunteer- and staff-led, for our guests.

We welcome groups of all kinds to come and host an activity at Gift of Life Howie’s House. Some ideas for an activity, include:

  • Teaching families how to knit,
  • Teaching an American Sign Language lesson,
  • Hosting a guided painting session,
  • Conducting a science experiment,
  • Teaching families to play Pokeno,
  • Performing with your acapella group,
  • Leading group yoga, or
  • Hosting bingo.

We are open to hearing all activity suggestions!

Activities are held each night, but we recommend hosting on Sundays to Thursdays at 7:00 PM as this is when we are at our highest occupancy.

Volunteer Guidelines:

  • Groups are limited to ten volunteers unless approved by the House before your arrival. The House has limited space, so we may not be able to accommodate groups exceeding ten volunteers.
  • Children under 18 are welcome to volunteer. However, they must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or adult supervisor while visiting Gift of Life Howie's House.

To sign-up for an activity, please visit bit.ly/HH-ActivitiesProgram.

We look forward to working with you!

About Gift of Life Howie's House

Location:

401 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123, US

Mission Statement

Gift of Life Howie's House serves as a "home away from home" for transplant patients and their families by providing temporary, affordable lodging, and supportive services to those who travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for transplant-related care. Our Volunteer Program is a critical component of our mission. Whether it's cooking a meal, answering the phone, transporting our guests, or thanking our donors, Howie's House volunteers are the "Heart of the House."

Description

Gift of Life Donor Program is the largest organ procurement organization (OPO) in the United States, leading the nation in the number of organ donors since 2008. Serving more than 11.3 million people across the eastern half of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware, we help and heal lives by coordinating the recovery and distribution of organs and tissues used in life-saving and life-enhancing transplants.
Many living outside of the Gift of Life service area travel to the Philadelphia area from outside the region for transplant-related care. Gift of Life Howie's House serves as a "home away from home" for these transplant patients and their families. Howie's House House not only provides housing but also home-cooked meals, transportation to and from local hospitals, and a community atmosphere for patients and families.
