ORGANIZATION: International Rescue Committee

The volunteer will be assisting in preparing for the arrival of new refugees and as well as helping in the IRC warehouse.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in preparing apartments for new refugee arrivals
  • Assist in procurement and distribution of household supplies
  • Assist in picking up and distributing donated furniture and household items
  • Assist in arranging donations in the warehouse and receiving them when needed
  • Assist in organizing IRC warehouse.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Energetic, empathetic, organized and ready to do a variety of jobs
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
  • Proficiency in a second language preferred: Spanish, French
  • Minimum 2-3 months, 10-15 hours per week
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Reliable transportation with proof of valid driver's license, insurance and clean driving record
  • Willing to adhere to IRC Volunteer and workplace policies

Description

Since 1960, the Miami resettlement office has resettled more than 10,000refugees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources--their motivation, their skills and their experiences--to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans. Currently, the office resettles and/or provides assistance to over 1,000 refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking per year in Miami

The IRC makes sure newly arrived refugees receive:

  • a furnished home
  • help with rent
  • health care
  • nutritious, affordable food
  • English language classes
  • help building job, computer & financial literacy skills
  • education for their children
  • social services and community support
  • legal services toward residency & citizenship
