CHRPA Cooler Champions!

Community Home Repair is a non-profit providing free home repair services to low-income homeowners around Pima County. Our staff and trained volunteers complete jobs in over 1500 homes each year. We are looking to grow our team!

We provide on-the-job training for volunteers, and welcome any skills that our volunteers may already have entering the assignment. Our scope of work includes plumbing of all sorts, heating and cooling, windows, doors, roof repair, electrical repairs and handicap accessibility/safety work. If a volunteer is unable to climb ladders, for example, they can be assigned to jobs that do not involve ladders, but our work and our work environment can be physically challenging.

Volunteers work in teams of two with a staff person or another volunteer. The team is provided with tools and vehicles, and has a great opportunity to meet and serve a wide variety of people in the community. In the summer, we work from 7:00 AM to between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Volunteers should come prepared for work which can be hot and dirty or cold and dirty or just dirty. Dress should be neat, representing CHRPA as well as being respectful of our clients. Volunteers provide their own lunch and drink. Sunscreen and hats are highly recommended during the hot season.

We place high value on a culture of respect and compassion for our clients and we strive to create a supportive and affirming teaching/learning environment among the staff and volunteers as well. We all have a lot to learn and a lot to teach. A little humor, a little humility and substantial flexibility go a long way towards preserving sanity and fully benefiting from the term of service.

Community Home Repair creates safer places to live by addressing health & safety concerns with efficient home repairs and adaptations, to support long term housing solutions for low-income homeowners and their families.

Description

Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona (CHRPA) is a non-profit with a 34 year history of providing emergency home repair services to low-income homeowners. We work across Pima County providing electrical and plumbing repairs, heating and cooling repairs, roof repairs, and building steps and wheelchair ramps. We focus on jobs that increase or maintain the health and safety of a client's home - we don't do drywall or paint. In 2015, our staff and volunteers completed over 1500 jobs. Behind this number are real people struggling to meet their basic needs with the resources they have available- elderly widows who haven’t had running water for months, families who are struggling to stay warm without a furnace, and people who are trapped in their homes because of unsafe and decaying steps. Community Home Repair has a long history of working with a wide spectrum of volunteers, some who are short-term and some who have been with the organization for 15 years or more. CHRPA is focused on collaboration and training, fostering an atmosphere where every volunteer can learn new skills and grow in service. Last year, we had 84 different volunteers. The crews in the field for CHRPA today doing all sorts of work. For some, the day will be easy and all the parts will fit just right. For others, the day will be frustrating and the work will have to be finished another day. But all of this work is done with great kindness and joy, with care for our clients, and with a boundless spirit of adventure.
