DESCRIPTION:

  • The Legal Advocate Assistant works with the Cherokee Family Violence Center Legal Program to help victims of abuse learn about their rights and assist them with navigating the legal process. The assistant may also interface directly with the client and provide information and emotional support for abuse victims during judicial proceedings and may conduct followup contacts with victims under the supervision of CFVC staff members. Two days of in-person training, and a minimum of ten additional hours of shadowing Legal Program staff members are required for this role. Volunteer training and shadowing of staff will take place in Canton, Georgia. Most volunteer activities in our Legal Program are conducted during court hours, which are typically 9AM-5PM, Monday through Friday.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answer phone calls using proper procedure
  • Provide emotional support to victims while in the legal office
  • Greet incoming clients and guests
  • Explain/explore legal options with victims

  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Ability to be assertive when necessary
  • Ability to communicate legal information using layman’s terms
