About SEA Literacy

Location:

2819 W. RICHARDSON PLACE, MILWAUKEE, WI 53208, US

Mission Statement

SEA Literacy uplifts the lives of refugee students in the Milwaukee area by empowering them to become engaged members of this diverse, dynamic community. Our goal is to foster social and educational development, thus creating community leaders and inspiring future generations. We are also committed to providing the Milwaukee community the opportunity to reach out to their new neighbors and strengthen harmony in our city!

Description

SEA Literacy (SEAL) provides year-round ESL lessons, homework tutoring, and recreational activities to refugee youth grades kindergarten through college. We meet on Tuesday evenings 6-8 pm and Saturdays mornings 10 am- 12 and we also go on field trips and have special events throughout the year. Children in this program attend by choice; they want to learn because they want to learn English, do better in the classroom and meet other kids. This is an advantage of volunteering here; you can see immediate improvement! SEAL focuses on helping refugee students, who have been in the US anywhere from a month to a few years, to help them be more fluent in English and more connected with peers and society. As a volunteer you will be helping the students read, learn and speak English, play games, work on STEM or art projects and/or assist them in doing their homework. If you have a skill you can teach (kids LOVE chess but need teachers, some taught knitting, etc.) we would love to work with you!
