DOCENTS:

It is a docent’s responsibility to tour visitors throughout the rooms of our museum. You might have two or three people in a small group, but you could have a larger group of eight or nine. Written material is available for each room. It includes the scope of each display, how it relates to the history of Montague, as well as the specifics of the artifacts. You can either choose to read the highlighted areas or the entire page, depending upon the interest of your group. There is always more information written in the docent guide than you would read or tell about. The guide will answer most questions that a visitor would have. Docents are needed during the summer months from 12:30 to about 4:15 on Sunday afternoons. Some docents are needed as greeters as visitors arrive, while others serve refreshments while working in our small store. You do not need to dress in costume for our summer openings. Some docents are asked to assist at other times when a special tour has been prearranged. Docents also volunteer from 1 - 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday the three weekends after Thanksgiving into December for our annual holiday open house. We encourage docents to wear colonial or Victorian costumes for these six open days. All docents are pre-trained, have available literature to read to be acquainted with the displays, and carry their docent booklet with them to feel comfortable with tour groups.

About Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Location:

1978 River Road, Bushkill, PA 18324, US

Mission Statement

The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.

The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

Description

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area encompasses 67,000 acres of mountain ridge, forest, and floodplain on both sides of the Delaware River in the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Forty miles of the Middle Delaware River are within the park, as well as trout streams, lakes, ponds, and some of the highest waterfalls of either state. The park is home to black bear, timber rattlesnakes, bald eagles, and, recently, nesting peregrine falcons. Ecosystems include hemlock ravines with bountiful rhodendron and ridgetops with prickly pear cactus.

Though set aside as an area for outdoor recreation, the land of this park is also rich in history. A number of structures remain from early Dutch settlement and the colonial contact period. The entire region was a frontier of the French & Indian War. Historic rural villages from the 18th and 19th centuries remain intact on the New Jersey side, and landscapes of past settlements are scattered throughout the park.

In the 19th century, the village of Delaware Water Gap was a focus of the early resort industry fostered by the railroads. Even today the region is known for its vacation appeal.

The proposal to dam the Delaware River near today's Smithfield Beach brought the region and its inhabitants into another era of American history -- the conservation and environmental movements of the 1960s and later.
