Description
The Yonkers Family YMCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1882. Our mission is to provide activities and services that develop the mind, body, and spirit. For 131years, the Yonkers YMCA has provided services including housing, adult and youth recreation, educational activities, and other programs meant to improve the quality of life in Yonkers. The Yonkers YMCA is the largest provider of SRO housing for men in Yonkers. Our services are available to all without regard to age, sex, race, or religion.
Our school age childcare program has been a beacon of light in southwest Yonkers as we are a "Safe Haven" for children and their parents. The YMCA serves as a crossroads for the Yonkers community. Our partnerships with over 30 community-based organizations allow us to provide enrichment activities and resources that are not available through many other programs. As a full service facility, we are able to provide academic, social, recreational, cultural and service learning opportunities for our participants. From basketball and soccer, to computers and media production, the YMCA offers our participants a comprehensive continuum of programs, services and supports.
The YMCA of Yonkers receives $5,000 annually through JC Penney to assist with scholarships for needy families.
This program is supported by program service fees paid directly to the YMCA by parents and the Westchester County Department of Social Services.
The YMCA serves as a host site for REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approached to Community Health) initiative of the Center for Disease Control. This allows the YMCA to serve as a key agency with others to unite and strengthen health services related to weight loss, healthy eating, safety, and exercise to underserved populations.
Youth Employment Training is a major offering to hundreds of youth in the Yonkers area providing both vocational and soft skills training.
The YMCA provides more than 100,000 meals each year through various services.
