Uganda: Teach adult refugee students

Many of the adult refugees that HOCW serves need to improve their language skills to be able to enter the job market, prepare for assylum, and communicate in a common language with locals and other refugees. The refugees learners we serve range from individuals who have never been to school and do not read or write in any language to college educated refugees with professional background who have some English skills.

HOCW holds 6 language and basic literacy classes a day serving up to 200 adults. Classes are larger than is ideal for learning and many of our learners could use extra one-on-one assistance with an English speaker. Volunteers are vital to the success of this program and we can utilize all skill levels. What we ask you to help with depends on skill and experience level. Here are some examples of things volunteers have done in the past:

Teach lessons
Take a small group aside to lead a conversation group
Provide extra assistance while the teacher is lecturing to indivuduals needing assistance with a certain topic
Tutoring a student needing extra help
Friday is debate day and our syudents love when volunteers present the topic and moderate the debate.
*We can also utilize any special skill you have. We have had volunteers teach classes in their particular area of expertise: Yoga, Zumba, Marketing, Meditation, painting, collage making, and others. **

About GlobalGiving

Mission Statement

Build an efficient, open, thriving marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them.

Description

GlobalGiving was founded by two former World Bank executives who decided to use the Internet to create a highly efficient marketplace. The GlobalGiving platform enables more funding to reach projects throughout the globe, and, at the same time, provides a more transparent, engaging way for donors to give.
Because we enable donors to give directly to projects, they know exactly where their money is going. Donors can see progress updates on most projects as funding is received and goals are met.

Donations made through GlobalGiving are higher impact because:

  • Money is going directly to a well-defined project versus supporting general operating expenses
  • Projects on globalgiving.com have exposure to thousands of donors, enabling us to aggregate multiple sources of funding for each project
  • Many projects on globalgiving.com are located in the developing world where a little money goes a long way
