Uganda: Children's Education Program Volunteer

HOCW serves a refugee and poor Ugandan population. State run education in Uganda is very limited. The reality for the families we serve is that if they cannot afford school fees, their children cannot go to school. Because of this, many children spend long periods of their childhood not in school. We serve many children who are not in school at all and many more who are far behind in their studies. We try to provide as many organized activities as possible including academic lessons, sports and arts. We are looking for volunteers who have experience teaching academics, coaching sports or are interested in teaching music, dance, drama or other cultural activities.

The Uganadan education system follows a schedule of three months in school followed by one month off. During the months where school is not in session we hold a full day children's prorgam for 100-150 children. This helps children who are behind in school to catch up as well as provides some of the refugee children who are not in school at all a opportunity to participate in organized education. We make it fun with lots of games, sports, stories and crafts! We always need help with these activities.

HOCW has a small day care program for babies who are not old enough to attend school. We use this opportunity to get our youngest members off to a healty start, exposing them to as much language and learning as we can fit in!

One of the most important things HOCW does is to create community in those who have had to leave everything behind. We have a football team, dance groups, and sports days. We love volunteer help with all of these.

Volunteers stay in a house in our compound. Our staff prepares 3 meals a day for volunteers
Fees are 150/week for 4 weeks or less and 100/week for five weeks or more. (this includes airport pickup, supervision, accommodations, and 3 meals daily)

Mission Statement

Build an efficient, open, thriving marketplace that connects people who have community and world-changing ideas with people who can support them.

Description

GlobalGiving was founded by two former World Bank executives who decided to use the Internet to create a highly efficient marketplace. The GlobalGiving platform enables more funding to reach projects throughout the globe, and, at the same time, provides a more transparent, engaging way for donors to give.
Because we enable donors to give directly to projects, they know exactly where their money is going. Donors can see progress updates on most projects as funding is received and goals are met.

Donations made through GlobalGiving are higher impact because:

  • Money is going directly to a well-defined project versus supporting general operating expenses
  • Projects on globalgiving.com have exposure to thousands of donors, enabling us to aggregate multiple sources of funding for each project
  • Many projects on globalgiving.com are located in the developing world where a little money goes a long way
