Photography Intern

DEFINITION: Under immediate supervision, provide photography and archival assistance to the Foster City Communications Division, and work closely with the Communications Director to capture high resolution, high quality images of Foster City and its infrastructure, as well as conceptualizing, content creating, filming, processing, and editing of photos for projects related to public engagement and outreach efforts for Foster City. Create a stock photo database and organizational system for photograph footage and archival photographs. The intern will assist with other assignments as needed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:
This is a unpaid part-time internship. The Photography Intern will assist the Communications Division and Public Engagement Communications Team with creating and editing photography and video projects as well as assist with the day-to-day Communications Department functions. Ability to commit 15-20 hours per week for at least 4 months.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Use technical skills to photograph public programs, major events, marketing content, B-roll for public engagement initiatives, interviews, on-location segments. Process and edit footage as directed by the Communications Director. Contribute to planning and storyboarding.

Create a system by which all photos are organized and accessible to Communications staff.

With guidance from the Communications Director, the intern will develop a Communications Photo Database, including:

  • Assessing photo resources and selecting representative and important photos for digital storage.

  • Generating metadata and tags for selected photos (such as subject, location, description, keywords, credit).

  • Organizing photos in a photo databasing system.

  • Digitizing archived materials for the database and future use.

Develop and populate Instagram account with Communications staff. Use photo and video footage for Instagram, other social media, or for general MBL use.


Assist in campaign launch activities. Develop and assist in aspects of marketing campaigns including printed materials, web content, and promotional programs. Develop and execute weekly communications to the Foster City Public Engagement Communications Team. Conduct and report on brand activity and effectiveness, specifically including: display/presentation, and social media analytics and identify followers and influencers in this position a major focus will be the City’s Instagram and Youtube accounts.

Flexibility of schedule is highly desirable, as the photography intern will be expected to attend City sponsored events and meetings to take photos.

Other tasks may include assisting with organizing and promotion of city-wide events such as Art and Wine Festival, Fourth of July, and collaborative programs with other city departments to promote public awareness and engagement.

JOB-RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of City services and programs; principles and practices of marketing, videography, and public outreach.

Ability and Skills to: Work proficiently with Microsoft Office, including effective use of Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Illustrator. Ability to deliver photos with acceptable quality, lighting, framing, and other elements. Proficiency with SLR or DSLR camera as well as editing software. Write clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences. Communicate effectively orally. Prepare public presentations for a variety of audiences including the community, service organizations and volunteers. Organize own activities and self-motivate. Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions; provide leadership to volunteers and coordinate with staff. Implement program plans. Function independently with minimal supervision. Effectively manage project assignments. Operate within budget allocations and meet deadlines. Establish effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Develop and maintain administrative databases. Maintain public and interpersonal relations in a group setting or in a one-to-one situation.

Experience: No experience is necessary; 6 months of paid or documented volunteer experience in any office environment is highly desirable. Past work/ portfolio documenting style and ability is highly desirable.
