Volunteer needed to assist staff in providing harm reduction services in skid row, including syringe exchange, overdose prevention, medical and mental health care, and wellness services.
The Center for Harm Reduction (CHR) operates a syringe exchange program seven days a week that provides free sterile syringes and injection equipment, as well as overdose prevention supplies, on a walk-in basis. Medical care, mental health care, group therapy, case management, detox, drug treatment, and wellness activities are also provided throughout the week.
We rely on volunteers to help us meet the immense need for services in skid row. We utilize a harm reduction approach, so volunteers must be comfortable working within this framework. Volunteers assist in everything from syringe exchange to data analysis to teaching classes.
We are in need of volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Training is available. This is a great opportunity for individuals with a background in social work, as well as students pursuing human services/social work/mental health education or medical training. Volunteers must be proficient in Microsoft word and excel, must be able to multi-task and manage an open lobby in a drop-in center, and be comfortable working with active drug users in a nonjudgmental, non-coercive and supportive manner.
