Be part of a small, active international organization that is doing big things, a unique program combining the service of a nonprofit with the entrepreneurship of a small business. Art Aids Art promotes education, wellbeing and sustainable economic development, working primarily with South African women and children impacted by poverty and/or HIV/AIDS. We are the first American organization to open an art & education center in South Africa's largest township, Khayelitsha. For more information, visit www.artaidsart.org. Art Aids Art has undertaken an exciting project to publish a South African Jazz Coloring Book for children (with accompanying music CD), with the ultimate goal of distributing it widely throughout the country to increase youth understanding of the nation's music history. The images and text for the book are complete. What remains is acquiring the following necessary permissions: 1) from photographers whose photos were used to provide the basis for the black line drawings, 2) from musicians to use their images, and 3) from record labels to use songs for the CD. We are midway through the process, but still have more to do in terms of reaching and getting responses from many of the above sources. At present, due to numerous projects in progress, we seek a volunteer to continue to move this process forward. Much of the required information will be provided, and some will need to be researched (online). Emailing and Skype calling (budget provided) will be required. Further details will be provided to insure that the volunteer has the information necessary to proceed with confidence. The volunteer will gain valuable experience dealing with a publishing project. As a virtual position, you will be able to schedule your work according to your available time. This part-time position will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in the arts, social entrepreneurship, Africa, literacy, and publishing. We seek an organized, detail-oriented, responsible, and energetic self-starter. We are happy to answer any questions that have not been addressed in this description.

Mission Statement

Art Aids Art, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, promotes education and sustainable economic development through the arts.

Description

Founded in 2003 by educators and human service professionals, Art Aids Art serves South African women and children through programs in impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town. With our U.S. office based in Altadena, California, Art Aids Art's American activities focus on educating the public about South African culture and the HIV/AIDS crisis through presentations at schools, community centers and private home gatherings. Each year, the organization leads an intergenerational group of volunteers to Cape Town, home of our South African headquarters, to provide services through our own programs and in collaboration with participating South African organizations. In addition, Art Aids Art stimulates economic opportunity for South African artist collectives, purchasing artwork at Fair Trade prices and exhibiting it in the United States. Income from American art sales is reinvested into our projects in Cape Town. In this regard, working with Art Aids Art provides a unique experience of working with a nonprofit that also works like a small business. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Because of our small size and wide range of activities, we offer a wide variety of activities for volunteers, including: -staffing our public events, including interacting with the public, setting up displays, and providing information about our programs. -assisting us with a variety of art documentation, including: digital photo editing and graphic design, review and data entry of storytelling interviews, organization of photographs and art materials, assisting with intake and inventorying of handcrafts from Africa, etc.
