Host Home Volunteers for Homeless LGBTQ Youth

ORGANIZATION: Pridelines

  • 6 people are interested

Did you know that 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ? Have you ever considered how you can help?

We are looking for community members (hosts) who are willing to open up their home and provide a room for a young person to live with them for a period of 6 months to a year. We work in partnership with hosts and youth to create a safe and supportive space, and develop the skills and resources for the youth to ultimately move into independence.

Open up your home and become a Host for a homeless young person through our Host Home Program. We need our community to help make this program a success. Together we can change the lives of LGBTQ homeless youth!

The Host Home Program, a program of Project SAFE, was established as a community response to the issue of youth homelessness and the lack of adequate housing in Miami-Dade County. This program specifically addresses the needs of homeless LGBTQ youth 18-24, and those most often underserved: youth of color, male-identified youth, and transgender youth.

Please contact Tracey at tracey@pridelines.org if you are interested in hosting or getting additional information.

About Pridelines

Location:

6360 NE 4th Court, Miami, FL 33138, US

Mission Statement

To support, educate and empower South Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and community in safe and diverse spaces to promote dialogue, wellness, and to foster social change.

Description

Pridelines is a grassroots nonprofit organization, founded by gay and bisexual youth for LGBTQ youth and their allies in the wake of Anita Bryant’s "Save Our Children" campaign. Rooted in a peer-led/adult-facilitated youth group model, and with the help of Dr Marilyn Volker, Peter Meyer and other concerned adults, the group began meeting at Miami-Dade College in 1982. In 1999, under the leadership of group member Dale Ayres, the group incorporated, moved into its own space and changed its name to Pridelines Youth Services. More than 30 years later, Pridelines continues to provide safe space, social support, skills building, leadership development and referrals to mental health, health care and support services for LGBTQ youth and their straight allies throughout South Florida. Today, the agency has grown and matured just like our youth. In 2015, Pridelines Youth Services shortened its name to Pridelines, reflecting our desire to support the lives of all members of South Florida’s LGBTQ community. We will continue to ensure that our LGBTQ youth have the support they need, while also committing to doing so throughout their lifetime.
