Emerge Community Development is now recruiting AmeriCorps VISTA and MN Opportunity Corps members for 2016-2017 service year. If you or someone in your network is looking for an opportunity to serve in the local community and develop professionally, this may be the right opportunity!

Emerge VISTA Program Emerge is a sponsor site for the AmeriCorps VISTA program. Since 2011, we have hosted a VISTA program that provides capacity building services for various nonprofit and government agencies in the metro and surrounding areas. VISTA members do not provide direct service to the community, rather they help programs build capacity, expand services in various ways, and may also help agencies seek additional funding streams. We have several VISTA host sites seeking members for the 2016-2017 service year. These host sites are a part of our VISTA cohort:180 Degrees, CAPI USA, Carver County, Crossing Home, Dakota County, Emerge, Operation de Novo, and Umoja Community Development. All of these sites have a focus providing re-entry services for currently incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals returning to the community after incarceration. The re-entry services provided are focused around housing, employment, and financial literacy services.

MN Opportunity Corps - Employment Navigators
Additionally, EMERGE is excited to announce that we have been selected to host 5 Minnesota Opportunity Corps Employment Navigators for the 2016-17 program year! The Minnesota Opportunity Corps is a strategic partnership between Serve Minnesota, Serve Minnesota Action Network, and a number of non-profit organizations in the nine-county Metro area coming together to use the power of national service to assist Minnesotans with economic barriers to become more self-sufficient by gaining and retaining living-wage jobs. Serving as an Employment Navigator provides members with the opportunity to gain experience in case management and employment coaching, and is a great entry point into the nonprofit sector coupled with a great deal of professional development. Members are trained to obtain their credential as a Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF).

Mission Statement

Our mission is to reveal the potential in people and communities through skill building, employment, and economic opportunity

Description

EMERGE is a community and workforce development organization based in North Minneapolis and Cedar-Riverside - neighborhoods that have struggled with some of the metro area’s highest rates of unemployment and most concentrated poverty.

Each year we help thousands of people access jobs, financial coaching, housing, and other key services along pathways to brighter futures. Our services are available to anyone who needs them, but many people we serve are facing significant obstacles. Some are re-entering the community after periods of incarceration. Others are overcoming generational poverty or are starting over in the US as New Americans and former refugees.

In 2016, EMERGE served 2,996 people: 784 gained jobs, 341 participated in career training, 306 people learned financial skills, and 85 formerly homeless families were housed. We offer adult and youth workforce services, combined with a range of other services, tailored to the specific needs of the participant. Every year the people we serve are approximately 90% people of color; 95% low-income with more than 60% under the poverty-line. About one-third are overcoming a criminal background; and 15% are over 21 and do not have a high school diploma/GED.

Overall, we facilitate life change in areas of our community where jobs are scarce, poverty levels are high, and racial/economic disparities prevail. EMERGE helps people facing significant obstacles redefine themselves. We are committed to creating better jobs, better lives, and better community.
