Regional Animal Services of King County/ RASKC

  • 3 people are interested

Adult volunteers who are very committed to positive dog-training and skilled with a wide range of large and very energetic dogs, especially pit bull terriers and mixes, are needed onThursday mornings, 8- 10am, for at least six months (time off okay for vacations and so forth). Key to success with RASKC dogs is kindness and positive reinforcement.

Typically you would share a shift with one or two volunteers.

Volunteers harness the dogs and take them out for a potty break. When all of the dogs of your color have enjoyed some initial time outside, then you take the dogs out for a longer walk.

Dog walkers are color-coded according to the type of dog they are eligible to walk.
. Green: Most Dog Walkers start as color "green" are eligible to work with our friendliest dogs.
. Blue: Dog Walkers who are assessed as "blue" are eligible to take out the shy dogs and the friendly dogs.
. Red: Dog Walkers who are identified as "red" are eligible to walk any of the adoptable dogs, including the ones that need skillful handling.

RASKC needs "red" Dog Walkers.

Next steps:

. Complete a Dog Walker application: https://tinyurl.com/DogWalker-2018

. Complete a general volunteer application: http://tinyurl.com/InitialApplic-2017

If you are selected, you will be asked to attend an initial two-hour training late morning on July 21 or August 25. Then you would schedule a 30-minute assessment with a RASKC staffer. After your color designation is received, you would be scheduled for two apprenticeship shifts with experienced volunteers. Then you would begin your regular weekly shift.

Within three months or so, you would also attend new volunteer orientation. Even better if you can attend sooner, rather than later. For times, dates, and locations, go to http://tinyurl.com/NVO-2018-dates, then click on "Select a Date."

Not eligible for court-ordered community service.

Thanks!
