ORGANIZATION: International Rescue Committee in Phoenix

Scope of Work:

International Rescue Committee is seeking volunteers to assist in our Citizenship Preparation program in Phoenix. We host classes at several locations in the metropolitan area and are always in need of caring and dedicated individuals to assist legal permanent residents who attend our classes. Learners attend these free classes to help them prepare for the U.S. naturalization process, which includes a reading test, a writing test, a civics test, and an interview. Our program focuses on every aspect of this process along with English language instruction.

Requirements:

  • Patience and a passion for helping others
  • A Level One fingerprint clearance card
  • Ability to commit to one (1) three-hour class per week for a 14-week period
  • Advanced English language proficiency
  • Willingness to learn and teach English as a second language (ESL), U.S. civics and U.S. history
  • TESOL certification is preferred but not required

Times and Locations:

Tuesdays or Thursdays- 4- 7 pm - Location Avondale

Saturdays - 9- 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm - Location Glendale

Expectations:

  • Volunteers are expected to interact with learners one-on-one and in small groups to provide English language and U.S. civics instruction assistance (using flashcards and worksheets, conducting mock-interviews and practice conversations, etc.) as requested by the instructor, who will always be present in class.
  • They are also expected to assist in the facilitation of class activities (handing out materials, modeling expectations, etc.) as requested by the instructor. We promote a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning environment and appreciate volunteers who do the same.
