Board Member

Minimum commitment: 2 years, hours vary

In order for the Mirror Image Arts’ operations team to do the incredibly important work it does, it is vital that it be supported by a diverse and dynamic Board of Directors that is active in advocating for the organization in the community as well as raising funds for program and operational use. As a member of our Board of Directors, you would attend monthly meetings and lead or serve on committees. You would work closely with other board members, staff and volunteers to plan special events and complete special projects, dedicating between 1 and 15 hours a week depending on the needs of the organization at any given time.

Please consider volunteering as a Board Member if you possess the following skills/qualifications:

  • Strong interest in the mission of the organization

  • Strong computer skills, including, but not limited to: Google Docs and Google Drive

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Mirror Image Arts’ beneficiaries

  • Professional experience with leadership accomplishments in business, government, education, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector

Expectations of the Board as a Whole:
The mission of Mirror Image Arts is to use theatre as language to inspire dialogue, encourage awareness and promote action in order to build a strong, compassionate and empowered community.

As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the board is responsible for

  • Determining the mission and purposes of the organization selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director

  • Strategic and organizational planning

  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management

  • Fundraising and resource development

  • Approving and monitoring Mirror Image Arts programs and services

  • Enhancing Mirror Image Arts’ public image

  • Assessing its own performance as the governing body

  • Ensuring Mirror Image Arts’ commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Mirror Image Arts serves

  • Identifying and recruiting highly qualified board members

Expectations of Individual Board Members:

Each individual board member is expected to

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for Mirror Image Arts to advance its mission

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve Mirror Image Arts’ mission

  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as s/he develops and implements Mirror Image Arts’ strategic plan

  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy

  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings (monthly)

  • Participate fully in one or more committees and manage the volunteers associated with those committees

  • Observe a program or rehearsal at least twice/year
    follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions

  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of Mirror Image Arts

Description

OUR VISION: Young people knowing and owning their value and purpose so they take responsibility for their impact.

WHO WE ARE: We use theatre as our vehicle to create a safe environment where participants can engage in open dialogue about important social issues. Our current focus is Bullying Prevention, but our programming concept is versatile. The Mirror Image Arts experience includes theatrically inspired artistic expression as well as critical thinking exercises such as Scholastic Problem Solving, root cause analysis and reflective processing. We believe that an empowered community has the power to affect positive social change. We are empowering our youth to generate change in the moment and see the value in their voices and the impact of their decisions.
