The Foundation for Letters (FFL) works with urban schools and community organizations in New York City to promote improved college access through engagement with writing. FFL connects students to the word; written, spoken, performed, by providing urban schools students and families with a range of literary-focused academic and enrichment opportunities. The Foundation aims to assist NYC public high schools with building networks of donors, volunteers and partners that will continue to support literacy-focused education programs at their schools. Our volunteer Board members help carry our mission forward!

As a small, but growing organization, we have outgrown our website (well, we've reached the point where we are looking for an easier to update site), and are currently looking help in designing a new site that is more suited to our needs. We are seeking volunteers who have time and experience and want to help, volunteers looking to gain experience/practice, or volunteers who might be interested in joining our Board of Directors to fill open spots on our Marketing committee. We would love it if ultimately you were interested in working with us in a broad capacity, but our current strong need is website support. Thanks!

A little more about FFL:

Although officially incorporated as the organization it is today in 2012, the mission and vision of FFL was born thirteen years ago in the Bronx. The Advisory Board of the Bronx Academy of Letters was formed to provide educational resources and enrichment opportunities to this new, small school.

The vision of that Board in 2003 was that in urban public schools, where resources were limited, external support for literacy education could provide improved academic performance, increased college readiness and better global citizenship among students. The Board supported and implemented programs at that one school that stressed increased fluency in communication, through immersion with the word; written, spoken and performed.

In 2016, the Foundation for Letters expands on the mission of the Bronx Academy of Letters Advisory Board by providing programs, resources and support for multiple schools accross New York City.

Description

OUR FOCUS

Promoting Writing Engagement

Environments that emphasize the value of the written word help provide students with a path to improved literacy. FFL fosters these environments by supporting a variety of writing programs, ranging from poetry to fiction, essays, journalism as well as spoken word and other genres.

Increasing College Readiness

Increased fluency with the word bears a close connection to success in high school, college, and beyond. FFL supports programs that introduce students at an early age to the critical importance of a college education. These programs help provide a path to attending and succeeding in college, and help better position urban students for educational and professional success.

Improving Global Citizenship

Students in underserved urban neighborhoods who are consistently exposed to the world beyond their present circumstances develop a thirst for further education and intellectual engagement that makes pursuing a college education attractive. FFL supports programs that use engagement with writing as a tool for improved global understanding. These programs are also designed to give the students a sense of belonging in today’s global community.
