DAWGS
Disabled Dogs Who Generously Serve

We are a dog and cat rescue. We rescue mostly disabled, senior and injured dogs. Three years ago we started a program we call DAWGS Disabled Animals Who Generously Serve.

We take in paralyzed dogs that we get wheelchairs for. We take them to obedience class and if they have the right temperment we take them to be evaluated and if they pass to be certified with Alliance of Therapy Dogs. The whole process takes about 6 months to complete. We have some of our dogs volunteering at LAX in the PUP program Pets Unstressing Passengers. This takes 2-3 months to get accepted because the handler has to go through a background check at the airport. Our dogs also volunteer at schools and senior facilities.

We are in need of handlers. Each therapy dog can volunteer but they must have a handler. A handler spends time by taking the dog to a refresher obedience class to bond and go to rescue events. The evaluation takes 4 weeks. To be a handler takes some time to start and some time to commit to volunteering at school events, the airport or any where we are asked to volunteer at. This program has been fun for the handlers and very rewarding when you see how people react to our disabled dogs and how they bring smiles and inspiration to children, teens and adult.

Mission Statement

The highest level of Dharma is non injury to all living things. Dharma Rescue for Cats and Dogs is a non profit organization rescuing cats and dogs. We provide them with shelter, spaying and neutering, medical care, and rehabilitation. Our rescue journey has given us the ability to care for abused, critically ill, disabled and senior dogs and cats.

Description

During our journey of rescuing disabled and senior dogs we wanted to do something to bring more attention to adopt older dogs and disabled ones. In 2013 we embarked on a idea to make our disabled and senior dogs therapy dogs. Thanks to the love and eagerness to please we have 7 disabled and senior dogs who are certified therapy dogs. 5 in wheelchairs, one 3 legged and a senior puppy mill breeder dog with some behavioral issues. Each dogs has a volunteer handler that they go out and volunteer with. we also have some of the dogs on the LAX PUP program Pets Unstressing Passengers. Our disabled dogs now serve the community by bring smiles to the faces of children, seniors and disabled. We need more handlers to take our rescues out to do volunteer work. This program bring so much joy to handlers, dogs and the people they meet.
