One of the parties in Stepney Green

We run cocktail parties every week on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for residents of 9 care homes across London. Volunteers living or working locally host the party joining residents to socialise over a drink.

Cocktails in Care Homes offers isolated older people an occasion to look forward to and a chance to meet new people in a fun, colourful atmosphere. Parties take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 - 7:30pm in Tower Hamlets, Islington, Southwark, Waltham Forest and Westminster. We will soon be launching the parties in Camden and Hammersmith and Fulham as well. "I'd been involved in befriending schemes for a number of years before coming across CICH. Whilst I could see the benefits of my weekly befriending visits, it became difficult to fit the volunteering around my changing lifestyle. Sometimes, even the befriending relationship felt quite lonely and isolated. When I heard about CICH I thought it sounded like a much more innovative way to tackle loneliness. It's a few hours of my time just once a month, which means it's easy to fit around my life. I feel involved with my community in a much wider sense, and connected to the other volunteers that care about tackling social isolation and caring for older members of our community.Mostly, I'm motivated to come back because it's fun. I enjoy decorating the party room, setting out the bar and catching up with the other party manager, who has since become a close friend. I enjoy seeing the regular faces and nibbling on mini cheddars. I enjoy talking to the residents, as it takes me out of my own world, and into theirs, which is often fascinating, heart-warming, sometimes heart-breaking.Being in a care home is a reality check of what may come of my own life in later years, and I feel the experience grounds me and makes me appreciate a lot more about my own life. It's such a fantastic initiative and I'm so glad to be involved." Zosia Poulter, Party Manager If you’d like to get to know your neighbours, enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and fancy a nightcap on your way home from work why not join Cocktails in Care Homes? This is a unique opportunity to volunteer on a project that is tackling care home loneliness one party at a time.

Mission Statement

Magic Me is an arts charity that brings the generations together to build a stronger, safer community. Our projects often link unlikely partners. Intergenerational groups meet on a weekly basis in schools, museums, older peoples clubs, care homes, community and cultural organisations.

Description

Over the past two decades Magic Me has created opportunities for older and younger people to come together through the arts to build stronger friendly communities.

Our projects use the performing arts, visual arts and music to bring together schools and day centres, sheltered accommodation and community groups, adult volunteers and care home residents.

In 2014-15 we ran 9 projects, 96 project sessions, 191 older and younger people taking part, 76 cocktail parties attended by 342 residents aged 65+ supported by 231 volunteers, all run from one tiny room in East London!
