Chess Commissar

We run weekly chess instruction for SeaTac area kids, grades K-12, at the SeaTac Community Center. We also host after school programs at the individual schools.

Our SeaTac kids is highly diverse (91% minority) and underserved (84% low income). Last year, only 31% met Math standards, and 38% met ELA standards. Chess instruction has been show to increase math scores by 18.6% and reading scores by 11.2%. It also boosts creativity, social skills, and reduces student incidents outside of class. Yet probably the most rewarding outcome is how the kids feel about themselves. They become more in their own eyes.

These great kids have fewer opportunities, yet need more. Â Can you help?

Times/Days: Support either option. Option #1 is best for those with regular work schedules. It's fine to miss shifts occasionally due to life, we just coordinate with the whole staff to make sure things are covered. If you are interested, we can make this work. No chess experience required.

  • Option #1: Thursdays: 5-6:45pm at the SeaTac Community Center
  • Option #2 Tuesdays: 3:00-4:15pm at a local school
