The Need in the Community

Every day, nail salon workers handle solvents, glues, polishes and other products containing chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer, allergies, respiratory, neurological and reproductive harm. These workers report acute health concerns such as headaches, dizziness, rashes and breathing difficulties. Most nail salon workers are women of reproductive age and are predominately Vietnamese immigrants, often with limited English skills. In California, there are over 312,000 cosmetologists who are licensed to provide both hair and nail services and over 129,000 licensed manicurists.

Who We are:

California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (Collaborative: www.cahealthynailsalon.org) is a statewide coalition of nearly 30 organizations (advocates, environmentalists, researchers, government agencies) whose mission is to make the nail salon industry safer and healthier for both workers and consumers. The Collaborative was funded by Asian Health Services ( www.asianhealthservices.org).

This year the Collaborative has funding from the Groundswell Fund to build up this movement through Integrated Voter Engagement.

What We Need Your Help With:

Throughout the year we will we need volunteers to assist us with:

  • Planning events - to promote the Get Out The Vote efforts and the Collaborative’s policies.
  • Phone banking - Calling registered voters in the Bay Area. Phone bank sites are in Oakland,CA
  • Door canvassing - to registered voters in the East Bay and South Bay

Course Credit

Training will be provided for these efforts. For student leaders majoring in Asian American Studies, Political Science, Public health, or you’re interested in community organizing, this would be a good and realistic taste of what that work is like. We would be open to explore opportunities where your participation could count for course or major credit.

It could lead to something more:

We are seeking volunteers to help out with one or more of these areas. Individuals who are able to take on more responsibility, have previous field organizing experience, and can commit larger and consistent hours over a longer term will be considered for paid positions. Funding is limited but we’ll at least be able to reimburse organizing-related expenses. Ability to speak Vietnamese is preferred but not required, and like other non-profit, public or private organizations, we have hired volunteers and interns for part-time and full-time positions when they worked out,

Please fill out this link and someone from the Collaborative will follow-up:
