Bobwhite Quail Population Monitoring -- Keosauqua, Iowa (Scientific long-term opportunity)

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Iowa Department of Natural Resources

Volunteers need to demonstrate knowledge of the bobwhite covey call, or be able to learn it quickly and reliably. The ability to follow a standardized procedure is critical for this opportunity. Prefer the volunteer to be reliable and available with 1 day notice and the ability to recall this volunteer for several years to maintain consistency.

DNR will provide simple training of the bobwhite call and utilize email for distributing their assigned location and data sheet.

Volunteer will drive themselves to the site. Walk across country to assigned point. Pre sunrise (dark). Listen for the covey call of quail. Document their observations. Walk back to vehicle. Report their observations via email, or mail (data sheets sent in). One point per morning. Conditions must be calm (low wind). Possible field issues are dark walking, rough terrain, heavy dew (wet), interruptions by passers by, etc. Volunteer will be working independently. Must be reliable and trustoworthy as this data is sensitive to guiding management efforts and potential future policy.

Volunteer Availability -- Mid-October to late Oct. 1hr pre-sunrise ready in the field at a predetermined point.
