COMMUNICATIONS/DESIGN INTERN

DEFINITION:

Under immediate supervision, provide support to the Communications department with design, development and production of communications and marketing materials for both internal and external use.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:

This is a non-paying internship. This part-time classification is designed to provide the incumbent with real life work experience in a field of public employment. Ability to commit 15-20 hours per week for at least 4 months.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The following duties are illustrative only. They are not meant to be a complete and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Daily work will include designing and producing creative, varied and well-executed designs and graphics based on direction from the Communications Director or other City staff. Graphics may be developed for multiple needs including print, social media and web use. Material created will include, but are not limited to booklets, program guides, logos, mailers, flyers, brochures, multi-page documents, invitations, presentations, FAQ sheets and other public outreach or marketing material.

Working with the Communications Division, intern will assist with all phases of design development, communication and coordination of ideas with staff, and work collaboratively with others to develop content and images. Intern will assist with the printing and production of all work, and is responsible for proper documentation and back up of all work.

Other tasks may include assisting with organizing and promotion of city-wide events such as the 4 th of July Festival, assisting with the City e-newsletter, and updating the City website.


JOB-RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of City services and programs; principles and practices of communications and public outreach.

Ability and Skills to: Must have strong graphic design skills and the ability to use graphic design software, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. Knowledge of HTML and CSS. Strong organizational and time management skills are required to meet deadlines. Work proficiently with Microsoft Office, including effective use of Excel and PowerPoint. Write clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences. Communicate effectively orally. Prepare public presentations for a variety of audiences including the community, service organizations and volunteers. Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Implement program plans. Effectively manage project assignments. Establish effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Develop and maintain administrative databases. Maintain public and interpersonal relations in a group setting or in a one-to-one situation.
