Do you enjoy hands-on work fabricating large-scale projects in metal, clay, and wood? Are you interested in wax sculptures, metal craft, and casting and welding bronze?

Our team is seeking hardy, strong resident volunteers to be involved with our extensive Sacred Art project fabricating small to large Buddhist statues.
This is a full-time live-in residential volunteer opportunity in a Buddhist Retreat Center.

THE WORK:

Odiyan Retreat Center offers a challenging and rewarding live-work retreat program where work is the vehicle for your inner development. You will mainly participate in detailed wax sculpture repair, mold making, bronze casting, statue breakout, sanding and polishing.

Outside of the Foundry, part of your working hours will also include cooking, kitchen clean-up, harvesting in vegetable gardens, maintaining the Temples, landscaping, and tending to our wildlife (exotic birds, horses, dogs etc).

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Healthy and without significant mental or physical health issues
  • Comfortable with heavy lifting, good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination while using hand tools such as grinders, polishers, and sand blasters
  • Experience not required
  • Eager for a hard-working wholesome lifestyle of service
  • Minimum age of 23 years old
  • Minimum commitment is 6 months
  • The ideal volunteer is open-minded, self-reflective and ready to engage deeply on both inner and outer levels. Couples are welcome
  • We cannot accept children or animal companions
  • We are a smoke and drug free community.

About: Odiyan Retreat Center is located on a 1000-acre spiritual and ecological preserve in rural Sonoma County, Northern California. We are perched on top of a ridge overlooking rolling mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Odiyan is modeled after Tibet's first monastery-a three-dimensional mandala. This mandala strives to manifests a way of life that integrates work with a path of self-exploration.

Odiyan's mission is establishing a home for the Dharma(Buddhist teachings) in the West and to support Buddhist centers and practitioners in Asia. Live-in volunteers support this purpose integrating creative and challenging work with a path of self-exploration that develops inner potential.

Description

Living at Odiyan is an opportunity to work for preserving enlightened knowledge for our world, and fostering harmony for oneself, our planet and all beings. Founded in 1975 by Tibetan Buddhist Lama Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, Odiyan Country Center is located on a 1000-acre spiritual and ecological preserve in rural Northern California, north of San Francisco. Odiyan is open to those who wish to offer their time and energy in service through our Resident Volunteer Work-Study program: 2024Work-Study in Action begins February, 2024 with entry dates available until May 2024.

Program length: Preference is given to applicants who commit for the full duration of 8 months. The minimum commitment is 6 months.


Although Odiyan has its foundations in Tibetan Buddhism, no religious affiliation is required to join the team. The ideal volunteer is open-minded, self-reflective and ready to engage deeply on both internally and with the work. Couples are welcome.

All residents receive vegetarian meals, housing, living allowance $200per month,($300 after one year), classes on Tibetan yoga, Buddhism, mantra, plus training in a wide variety of practical skills, trades and sacred arts.

Applicants need to be in good physical shape and able to engage manual work for hours during the day, This includes repeated lifting up to 40lbs, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, use of hand power tools and small machinery.
